Weddings

A wedding is a service of worship.  Vows are exchanged "in the presence of God and these witnesses," and the marriage is solemnized with prayer and blessings.

The Book of Order, which is part of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church, USA, contains these specific instructions concerning the Christian marriage service (Section W-4.9000):  Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire human family.  Marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man.  For Christians marriage is a covenant through which a man and a woman are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship.  In a service of Christian marriage a lifelong commitment is made by a woman and a man to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by the community of faith.

The Christian marriage ceremony is a service of worship before God, normally conducted within the house of God.  Reverence is expected on the part of all present, and the service shall be under the sole direction of the minister.  Such music as accompanies the ceremony should direct attention to God, who sanctifies the marriage, and special care should be taken to assure that it is suitable and reverent.  The congregation may join in hymns and other musical forms of praise and prayer.

At Fort Hill Presbyterian Church we conduct weddings for those who are actively involved in the life of the congregation and our Clemson Presbyterian Student Association.  Please contact one of the pastors of the church to schedule marriage preparation and a wedding.
